Lessons learned.... The hard way.

Always buy at least 10% more tile than you need. Although in this case I'm glad we didn't because we wound up with what I think is a better looking floor than the original. But generally you really want to buy extra. We were novices when we purchased the originals.

Also, never talk your spouse into using another product than the one he's had luck with in the past just to get a job done sooner. Though it seemed to work just fine at the time, it wasn't long before one of the tiles cracked.

After hubby carefully removed all the tiles we took one with us and headed to HoDe and L's. We were very lucky to find a marble tile that coordinated with the originals since the original tile was no longer available.

Once home I scanned both tiles and used the Paint program to play around with patterns. The one you see on the right won. #lessonlearned

Original "special purchase" from HoDe before we broke ground on our home. Fell in love with them the second I saw them.

Pretty much how the room looks now with a few changes to what's on the dresser.

    Thank you Steve and Jamala.

Steve other than the layout, I really need to give credit to my awesome hubby. I'm usually just the idea person. When I have an idea it almost always includes work for him so he hates it when I say "I've been thinking". ...»

Jamala, we noticed that too and it also seems to draw one in from the entry into our Gentleman's Parlor which is straight and slightly to the right of the front door, or from the Ladies Parlor to the GP too. Here's the floor plan to help that comment make sense.

Great tips, Becky. They both look lovely to me. I didn't realize your husband was so handy! Lucky you :) Is this new? Also, you gave me a good idea for a hashtag - #lessonlearned :)

Thank you Miriam. I've been blessed for close to 33 years now with the most wonderfully handy hubby. Between the two of us we can do almost anything.

We actually redid the floor over six years ago, but I was reminded of it when another member asked about removing tiles to make a pattern when rearranging their kitchen cabinetry. I'll add a ...»

current photo of the room taken from the stairway looking down in the original post and add the hashtag too.

    Thank you Sharon.

Your floor looks great, Becky! Was it difficult to remove the tiles and get all the grout off them?

Well SheilaG, it wasn't difficult for me personally. {{giggle}} Hubby did all the hard labor. And yes I'm sure he'd say it was a task he wouldn't want to do again, but he's a trouper and did it.

I'll have to ask him for sure this evening, but I do remember he used a large Spackle Knife for the task. After breaking the cracked tile and removing it he carefully slipped the knife under ...»

unbroken tiles to remove them. I think only one other tile broke in the process. Once all were removed he scraped each tile bottom and sides and the Hardibacker clean using the Spackle Knife again. Once the floor was vacuumed of any dust he was ready to start re-tiling.

{{laughter}} Thank youSheila. Though he has an awesome sense of humor this type of job doesn't give one a whole lot to laugh about. Well other than at ourselves for being so ignorant in not buying extra tiles.

You are definitely right about buying extra tile as you never know when or how you can use it. Also, if you have someone else order and lay the tile make sure you ask for any extra tile. After all, you paid for it. My ex used to install tile and he would bring all the left over home.

I found that out when we had our kitchen counters installed Sondra. I was shocked! I had to argue with the installer to get him to leave the cutouts from the sink and cooktop. He kept insisting they belonged to the company he worked for. Since hubby and I were the contractors for our home I knew exactly how much we ordered, how much it cost per square foot and how much we paid. When I told him that, doing the math for him, he ...»
    wasn't sure what to say.

I asked him what they did with the cut outs and he had the gall to tell me they made cutting boards and sold them. Nice scam they had going there. Though I'm generally very easy to get along with, that really ticked me off, so I told him if he took them I'd call the police and report him as steeling while working in our home and give them the license plate of the vehicle he was driving. He left the cutouts.
