Just passing on what is an old school way to get rid of ants and it really works. Its boric acid and honey mixed into a paste.I put it in a shallow jar top or something shallow and place it by ant hills or where i see them active.I have even lifted up some grass near concrete and placed some there just on the earth and it didnt affect the grass or anything else.It works great in the house or anywhere they are.In the house i put them on the countertops and outside i tuck them in and my dogs, cat or any outside creatues have never gone near them.If your leary of leaving them outside for days or such just put them somewhere at night and replace them the next day.The ants bring it back to there nests and it kills the nest.

I was told aspartame works as well. I have been using it and it seems to be working for me. I just put some on a slab of tin foil and leave it on my deck.

My mum always used newly boiled water. Straight onto the nest. I have heard that vinegar is very good but not sure how it should be used... a google search may be needed on that one

Borax. The stuff thats in the laundry aisle. Don't need to make a paste, just sprinkle it all over the ant hill (when they aren't active). I tried everything else and borax got rid of fire ants. I edited this to add a link. http://www.beyondpesticides.org/infoservices/pesticidefactsheets/leasttoxic/boricacid_borates_borax.php

@Lillyz Can't wait to try the Borax. I live in FL and we have lots of Fire Ants here too. I tried the Grits but it didn't really help. (I heard someone on TV recently saying the ants won't actually eat them, they just fill up the ant hill and they move elsewhere.

I read the other day that if you give ants grits they eat it, it swells, and then they die. I don't know if it works, but it sure is a natural.

@Nudgger There are several articles out there stating grits do not kill ants. Here is one: http://www.pestproducts.com/grits.htm. I know others swear by it. We had a carpenter ant problem and used Diatomaceous earth (DE) with great success. DE is actually small rocks so it is nontoxic. Found at the local hardware store. It took several applications (reapply near nest after each rain), but it seems to work. Whichever method you try, look for something that takes several days, so that it carries back to the nest. Good luck!!

My Mom used to make me boil water in a teapot and pour it directly into the hole in the top of the nest and I still do it. Always works, it is cheap and does not hurt the environment.

Borax mixed sparingly with jelly and with peanut butter - separately. Some ants like sweet. Some like meat. I cut some holes near the bottom of a small plastic container with a lid like the Glad Takealongs and add a teaspoon or so of the Borax mixture. Borax is supposed to be relatively benign, but I have a dog and don't want to take any chances. It's cheap and effective without the nasty chemicals in commercial products.

Nematodes for ants...good for the environment...all natural. They don't harm anything but ants and their eggs....not beneficial insects, animals or plants. Boiling water just displaces the nest.

Not for everybody -- but, ants hate human urine...all natural. (Does NOT have to be boiling) Relatively cheap and often available.
  • packaged cornbread mix that says it is sweetened and put it where they are coming in if you can find it, or even on your counter in a small lid. They will take it to the mound, everyone will eat it and die, they can't digest the cornmeal, but will take it because it is sweetened. Little goes a long way.
