Rubber backing on area rug needs to be replaced

We like the area rug at the entrance to our house however the rubber backing on is beginning to disintegrated. Is there some way to add a new backing (or fix the existing one) that won't raise the rug too far off the floor (causing people to trip), stick to the floor, and not scratch the floor?

You can buy rubber slip mats at Bed Bath, and stores of that kind. I don't know about affixing it to the rug, but it can go under the rug without adding height or trip factor.

Rubber cement ...you can paint it on the back of a rug to keep it from slipping.

I've heard of using latex caulk by running rows of it over the underside of your rug, but there are actually products that are made for backing rugs. I'm linking two of them below. You might want to call HoDe and see if they carry the first product linked in their stores so you can buy just a can if that's all you need. The heat dries out the backing and it soon cracks and falls off.
