Arbor Day - Let's talk about beautiful trees....

Arbor Day is a day dedicated to public tree planting. The first Arbor Day was in Nebraska, April 10, 1872. On that day they planted one million trees. Arbor Day is celebrated around the world now.
Go HERE to find out when Arbor Day is in your state. Florida's and Louisiana's Arbor Days are in January. Warm enough down there to still dig in the ground. Not Connecticut - although I did get all those bulbs I bought for 2 cents a package - in the ground. The ground was workable last week. It's not workable this week. Last night it was 7 degrees. Bitter cold.
Oh, I also found out what hardiness zone we're in. We are in 6/7 zones. I think we're right on the line, actually. It's cold but not as cold as Massachusetts. Anyway, if you'd like to know YOUR hardiness zone for planting check it out HERE.
Remember, Spring is only a few short months away! Linda

I'm always happy to celebrate trees, Linda. I'm not sure what zone system the Arbor Day Foundation uses, but I always recommend the one from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which was just revised last year. Simply plug in your Zip code: http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/ There is also an interesting interactive version that provides street-level detail, so you can see just where the zones change: http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/InteractiveMap.aspx

Count me in celebrating trees. I'm happy to do so every day of the year. We've planted ten on our land since we moved here nine years ago. We've more planned to fill in where we lost some pines to a virus. We're being very careful to plant trees that are local so they'll be hardier. And being that I live in Nebraska, I've visited Arbor Lodge and have been a member of the Arbor Day Foundation before. Something I need to do again. Thanks for the reminder. http://www.arborday.org/shopping/memberships/memberships.cfm
