  • I started by removing the covers and washing them.
  • I labeled the "fluff" taken from the back cushions so I wouldn't get confused when it was time to re-stuff.
  • I used this quilt batting ($9.99 at Walmart) to beef up the cushions.
  • I simply trimmed the batting and wrapped it around the bottom cushions to boost their fluff-ability. Yep. That's the technical term. ;)
  • I put the covers back on the new beefed-up cushions and now my couch looks as good as new.

cleaners and got a lot of his lightweight bags. After putting on the batting, wrap the cushion in this very soft plastic making sure that the leading edge (ie. the edge that is going into the cover first) is wrapped all the way around. It slipped in almost effortlessly! I think that if you wanted to, that plastic could be slipped back off and out, but I left it on as it makes no noise and added extra protection to the cushions.

  • Build a simple firepit with pavers and a firebowl. We got our firebowl from Lowe's for less than $80.
  • Stack pavers on level ground. We put ours on our concrete patio.
  • For a 35" firebowl we used 48 pavers and stacked them 4 layers high.
  • Easy to move if needed, simple and inexpensive! 1

DIY Industrial Chic Sconce

I was challenged to fill up a large blank wall on a very small budget. For about $20 I made 3 large wall sconces and I love the industrial feel they bring to my dining/entry! http://www.shanty-2-chic.com/2012/02/indust...

  • I chose Benjamin Moore Wythe Blue for the walls. 1
  • BEFORE ... beautiful and bold shades of reds, golds and greens filled their spaces, but it was time for a change!
  • AFTER: a calmer, relaxing space! We're going to be adding bamboo shades in the near future, too. 4
  • Fun spool table from Ballards paired with a fun, glass lamp from Pottery Barn. I chose four of these comfy, swivel rockers from Capri Furniture. 1
  • Of course, I just *had* to add an oversized, vintage boat! I also painted the table Annie Sloane's Old White chalk paint, followed by a bit of distressing. 3

Do you think builders/contractors benefit from getting a woman's perspective?

I was recently hired by some friends of ours to work alongside their builder in the reconstruction of their fire-destroyed home (no one was hurt!). The wife has entrusted me with the ...»
responsibility of being her "voice" when it comes to elements in the design that need a female's input and I think the builder and I make a great team as a result. So, what do you think? Is it important for a builder/contractor to have a woman's perspective in the process of building or remodeling a home? I'd love to hear from you! ~Vanessa

My new Master Shower Renovation

Had this dark cave of a builder's shower in my master bath, and I had had about enough of that!... needed a flashlight to shave!! =) Now with glass letting in all light, especially from the large window over the tub, an extra 3 square feet of shower space and a new super quiet exhaust/light fixture, I'm in 7th Heaven! My legs look better too!

Sadly, no,we didn't do it ourselves but by self contracting we saved a bundle. We also saved ...»
tremendously on the field and border tiles from the HD big box store and the pebble tiles on the floor were from a company online that was 50% off!! We had to do our best to match the existing floor tile and tub surround. The glass surround we ordered direct online ourselves because the contractor wanted $900 more for the same deal.
