My kitchen ceiling fixture is exactly like yours. I am eager to see what you find out!

Is yours recessed into the ceiling? I had one like that and I took the fixture down and the long fleurescent lights I had molding put around the edges and painted it. (I am now thinking of adding ceiling tiles on the upper part).

I believe that fixture is an easy take down, remove the plastic and look how it is attached, usually several screws, most are just one big fixture ( for some awful reason they were popular) before you take it down make sure power is tuned off at electric panel ( not just at light switch) take it down, repaint ceiling and hang new fixture ( there are several options at Lowes, Home Depot etc...) if you are not comfortable wiring ( or unwiring the old fixture) find someone with electical knowledge, it's not a hard job but working with electric you have to know what is safe. ALWAYS turn off circuit at electical panel ( and check to make sure power is off at chosen location ) when working on any electric project. If taking down this fixture is not an option, then paint the wooden part whatever color you like then add new light cover, I've seen several options at either Lowes or Home Depot, they even have one that is open grid type that bugs can't get trapped in. Good Luck.

I had that same ceiling lite (6) panels. Had an electrician put 4 can lites and small ceiling fan in middle with lite kit, mad a huge difference. much brighter and had the benefit of the fan.

Thanks Susan! We have a ceiling fan in another part of the kitchen (over the dining table). I too was thinking of putting in recessed lighting.
