If you are using chalk paint, you only need to sand if you have areas that are flaking. it also depends on how you want the final product to look. If you want a more modern, smooth look, I would lightly sand so that the surface is smooth. If you want a more rustic look, you are probably OK not sanding. Do make sure the piece is clean and does not have a wax on it. If in doubt, wash it with a TSP solution just to make sure. It is very disheartening to finish painting a piece and have the paint start peeling off. Do good prep and you will have a great finished piece. Use clear soft wax made for chalk paint after your piece is finished.I know it will be lovely. This piece has beautiful lines.

You have to use common sense even when using chalk paint. If it is peeling yes sand it down. Make sure it isn't painted with lead paint. Chalk paint adheres better, but just becausereo all my work that way I get a nice finish every time. it does adhere better, butmit doesn't mean you don't need to prep it, sanding, and even cleaning and finishing a piece will help you get a nice finish.
