Reversible Checkerboard Wooden Tray

Medium
An ebony-stained checkerboard on one side of this reversible wooden tray provides a bit of whimsey and loads of fun to this very functional DIY project!

I love this tray! The handles just pull through to either side, so I can use it as a checkerboard or as a plain wood tray.
This tray started as a damaged wood panel from the scratch and dent section at Lowe's!

After carefully measuring and taping out my checkerboard, I was ready to stain it. Half of the squares will be in an ebony stain, and the rest will be the same as the tray, American Walnut.
After staining and drilling holes for the rope handles, the tray is ready for a coat of polyurethane (I used water-based Polysatin). Here's the finished product:

Here it is as a part of our Coastal Vibe Mantel...

How do you tie the rope handles so the knots don’t show on one side or the other? Thank you.
