Changing grout color on already sealed grout

Question

I have grouted and sealed all the tiles in my bathroom, floor and shower walls. Now I want to change the color to something darker. I have done this before, but Lowe's has changed the brand of grout color and the new stuff is giving me a hard time. I'm thinking it may be because I already sealed the grout. Someone help! Any suggestions?

I have done this using a quart of outdoor acrylic paint on the tiles around my fireplace and it it perfect 5 years later. The tiles and grout are white and it cleans up with a paper towel and Windex. Nothing can penetrate the paint, so soot, ashes, and dirt just wipe off. Going darker on grout, especially in a bathroom, can give a look of being smaller, pieced and dirty. If it is that you are trying to avoid the lighter grout darkening with dirt in the future, you won't have that problem with the outdoor paint. It has worked for me as well as the Grout Renew, but is much cheaper, especially when you are doing a large room. It will look fantastic. Good luck.

I have used Grout Renew with fantastic results. But I have also used a gray outdoor paint in my kitchen. It has worn great, I have not had to touch it up in 4 years.

I have used plain old acrylic paint then resealed my grout.

I would buy a acrylic paint pen the color you want. The pen come in different heads find the one that the size of your grout lines and paint it in. Then I would get a small brush and reseal your grout. Let the paint pen dry good first. This work will good.

You might need to strip the floor first. When I was buying grout renew, a flooring specialist told me to scrub the floors first with a stripper, then do the grout, and then seal the tile and grout.

Drimmel out the old grout, 'if you have the time' and then buy the grout in the tubes like caulk   and re-apply, it comes in several different colors. Or if you get enough of the old grout out with your Drimmel tools, just re grout. there is a new premixed grout that already has a sealer in it, I buy it at Lowes. mapi products

Because of the sealer you previously used I would suggest you acid wash the grout, allow it to dry overnight then apply your grout color. You'll have to remove the sealer in order for the new color to take. With the sealer still in place it would be like trying to stain a piece of wood furniture with the previously applied polyurethane still on it.

I once had this done on my walls, and the tile man scraped out the old grout, then cleaned everything up with denatured alcohol before applying new grout. Also I believe there is a product with grout and sealer all-in-one.

This way off topic, but related somewhat. Where I live our sprinkler system's water has rust in it that stains everything it hits; concrete, brick, wood, etc. My concern is with my driveway and sidewalk. What home remedy is there to put on this rust to block it. I've done most all the commercial stuff to no avail. Someone, neighborhood youth, splattered my truck and driveway with something that dried powery white and every spot on the concrete has remained white/concrete color. What was it they used?.......I'll need 55 gallons of it!
