Will this tree survive?

The tree in the foreground is a 3 yr old Eastern Redbud and the weather this past winter proved to have taken its toll. As you can see there are only leaves at its base. The tree is 6 ft tall and the empty branches snap of until I get maybe halfway down and then there is a slight resistance but they still come off.
Should I:
1) leave the tree as it
2) chop it off at the ground and allow the new growth to take over
3) dig the whole thing up and get a new tree

I believe your main trunk is dead, let it come back at root, prune in fall to select single stuck/trunk. they usually grow fast when they come back from root. I would also say add extra mulch to keeps roots cool, when you see these trees in the wild they a generally an undergrowth tree.

@Lagree Wyndham just to be sure I understand correctly, I should leave it alone until I do fall pruning and then it is ok to cut off the dead clear down to the base if needed? Would you wrap it along with extra mulch before winter sets in?

Go ahead and take dead part off, in fall select one of the sprouts as you new trunk, and remove the other suckers, and mulch. I am not sure about wrapping I am in SC and winters are mild. I would check with a nursery of agriculture extension office about winter prep for a rosebud sapling in your zone.

I would get a new one and maybe plant it close by. Then do the trimming thing. You could try cutting it off now and seeing what happens. The bare tree is kind of ugly. Life is short.

@Beth Ward I agree, the bare tree is ugly but DH is attached to it so I will make the effort to see if we can save it

Dee, Ya never know. I have a small bay tree in a pot. I brought it inside for the winter and my dog chewed it up. (the dog ate my homework.) I kept what was left and now it is a really nice bush. None of it was dead though just mutilated. Can you test it to see if it is wick? Scrape the bark going down until there is green live tree. You can cut it off there and get a jump on the growing process. If you want to be really sneaky, if the bark is dead all the way down, buy a new one. First dig out the old one, plant the new tree it it's place. Call it a miracle! Stick to your story... it is a miracle!!
