Create Your Own DIY Cutting Board
I love cutting boards. Even before cutting boards became the "in" thing, my sweet farmer's wife Mama had a slew of cutting boards tucked into her cabinets, one for almost anything imaginable. But have you priced them lately?? Hello $$$$. I happened to run across some boards at Lowe's, and well. the rest is history.
I started out with an 8' long board that closely resembled the look of chopping block.
It was a 16" in width, so I decided to make a 16x16 cutting board. You could cut the board to any width you needed. We had our own saws, but if you did not the friednly guys at Lowe's will cut them for you.
I wanted a thicker cutting board, so I used a wood glue sandwiched between two 16x16 sections, and added some bricks on top for weight until the sections were glued together.
That gave me the perfect thickness. Then, I cut for bun feet from a 2" piece of dowel.
After some sanding with a 220 grit sanding block, I applied several coats of a Butcher Block oil and finish to the top surface and sides of the board.
Once dry, I had one beautiful cutting boar which cost me less than $15 to make. Best part is, I had enough wood leftover to make another cutting board. WIN - WIN. :)

I have several home made cutting boards....we have a cabinet shop. I must say that pine is not a suitable wood for a cutting board unless it is strictly decorative...its too soft so over time the pine will not stay stable particularly with those knots, but more importantly pine often has pitch or rosin (that lovely smell like Christmas trees?) it can impart that essence to the food you are cutting on it. Nice idea
