We need a new A/C & furnace installed in our crawlspace.

We're going with a Trane system and are wondering if replacing the duct is highly recommended. They quoted $1800 to replace it although didn't press the issue. Sealing the existing duct is included in their price.

Why did they quote replacing the ductwork? How old is it or is it damaged or did you house first have just central heat without insulated ductwork? It might also be an "add-on" for them to make a little more money!

They were low-key about it but the existing duct is 25 years old as is the A/C & furnace. It's insulated but not to the degree that a new duct would be. It was a bit of an afterthought on their part so I'm inclined to stay with the existing duct which they will seal.

Stay with it, save your money. The price they gave is in line with an average duct work job but sealing will be fine. The insulation isn't as huge of an issue because it's in the crawl, now if it were in the attic that would be different. Good choice of brand, make sure you register online for the full warranty!

I agree pretty much on everything that Emperor stated, except the insulation. This is a very important aspect of the install and retrofit process. Unless your crawl space is part of the building envelope, ( area in which you condition year round) it should be properly insulated to prevent condensation on exterior of ducts during the cooling months and cold air blasts during the winter when the heat first turns on. ...»

As long as your ducts are in good condition and properly sized air sealing will save you a bunch of money on your utility bills and make the air within the home much healthier as it will not draw outside air into the system.

The only thing that I would have to add to this is unless there is mold in the existing duct work due to moisture leaking into the system .
