I have a large swing that is currently unfinished, and would like to paint it some colorful colors, but would like suggestions from someone who has done this before.

Any color you like but use spray paint for outdoors. If your children are little I would trace their hands and or feet on the swing

My folks had one of those massive two-seater wooden swings that face each other. It was stained to look like redwood. By the second year, Mom had stenciled leaves and flowers on it. She had no shortage of leaves to use as stencils. She used an exterior clear finish on it (same stuff Dad used on his wooden skiff). It lasted 22 years.

I did mine in homemade chalk paint. I had about 1/2 of a quart of turquoise paint left, added about 1/4 or less plaster of paris and about half that amount of warm water - mixed it up really well and painted a swing that really should have been stripped and sanded to get the old color, red, off. BUT the paint worked, looks beautiful after 2 years outdoors! Just brushed it on - easy!!! and cheap!!

transmission fluid will turn it a redish stain and you can do that every year to keep the wood treated

You could use wood stains, or Prime, undercoat and then 2 layers of top coat gloss.
