Here's some information on Christmas Cactus on eHow: http://www.ehow.com/info_8162839_christmas-cactus-pests.html I'd go ahead and use an insecticidal soap and treat your plant. You may also need to repot it as the soil may also be infested. Good luck!
  • It looks like scale. We had these bugs take over ours so badly we had to remove them! http://www.clemson.edu/extension/hgic/pests/plant_pests/shrubs/hgic2054.html

Euonymus are famous for getting white scale. It's a tiny insect that lives on the leaves and stems, sucking the sap out of your plant, creating sticky "honey dew" substance Thayer attract ants. Left untreated will eventually cause plant to die. Since these tiny bugs are sheltered by their waxy dome, they are hard to kill. You should spray them now with a pesticide (YES! A real Honest to goodness pesticide , Ortho makes several good ones for scale) and then treat it systemically through the roots so they will eat the poisoned sap. Go to a good local nursery for more help. What you gain in knowledge will make up for the small higher price. Large box stores usually don't have specialists in the pesticide aisle. You can use something called Volk oil, if they still make it, in the fall to smother them. The females shed their dome to find a mate. If she doesn't mate, she will die. It's a long process...( and euonymus don't cost very much) so you might want to replace them...but pull them out this year ane treat the area - replace next year.

I used to work for a nursery, and my boss said, "With euonymus it's not a matter of IF they get scale, it's WHEN they get scale." (They all will, sooner or later.)

You can purchase insecticidal soap and oil…both spray on trees and shrubs and kill these ugly pests….I use the oil first, and make sure you get the underside of the leaves as well as the tops of the leaves and the stems, wait a couple of days and use the soap…That should help…keep an eye out for re-infestation…may take a month or two for the plant to come around.

My euonymus had scale and I sprayed it with WD-40. It killed the scale and did not harm the plant. Scale is also transmitted from plant to plant via dead leaves so be sure and pick up and dispose of any leaves or twigs that fall off the plant. This can be very tedious but otherwise scale will keep returning and spread.
