Electrical Spool Upcycled Into Patriotic Plant Stand

For my inspiration piece, I took this small electrical spool and turned into something super patriotic, fun, vibrant and unique! Make sure you check out the link at the end of the post to see the full tutorial, including the colors I used, as well as to see all of this month's entries!
It started out as this! It's actually a smaller spool, so instead of slats of wood in the middle, it has heavy duty, industrial grade cardboard. I knew I couldn't make it into a stool for an adult to use since I wasn't sure how sturdy the cardboard was.
So I decided to turn it into THIS! With the coming soon, I decided to give it an Americana-inspired design. I used this month's Fab Furniture Flippin' Contest Sponsor's products, called Unicorn SPiT Stains.
I used my daughter's foam star stickers to make some stencils and traced around them for the stars. You can see more pics of this in my blog post. I simply hand painted them in, and also added a layer of blue around the edges to ensure that I didn't stain or bleed into the stars with the blue.
To finish it off, I sealed with some Tung Oil then clear wax once the Oil had cured. If you are planning on leaving it out in the garden permanently with no cover from the elements, you can topcoat it with a Marine or Spar Varnish instead of the oil and wax I used. Mine will sit under a covered porch in my yard so it won't have the elements on it for the most part.
Oh! I also wrapped the center with some burlap. I used an upholstery stapler to secure it and hid the staples within the fabric, so that they wouldn't stick out. I love my little spool and will likely be doing a larger one for a patio bar table, so stayed tuned!

I had a PG&E spool that was larger and it did well as a coffee table when I was single and very broke LOL........I loved it! Wish I still had it. It was a great coffee table! ;-)
