Hello all crafters!! I am making a head board out of shutters, my problem is that I want them to have BIG peeling paint? The shutters are a dark pine color now and I want it to have a grey undertone with off white/beige"y" peeling paint!! My stain (the color I want) is Rust-Oleum...weathered gray...the off white/beige is ASCP....does anyone know how to make this work?? It is going to take about 2 and a half pairs of shutters (5 one panels) and I do not want to have to re- do it over and over....I have washed the shutters with vinegar and scrubbed each shutter plank? They are now drying!!! Can anyone help me with this HOPEFUL process?? I will say THANK YOU NOW in advance!!! PLEASE HELP ME!! If you have questions, I will do my best to answer!!! THANK YOU....THANK YOU!!!

In general, you paint the base coat the regular way, then apply the crackle medium, then the top coat. If you put a thicker coat of the crackle medium, the "cracks" will be bigger.

You can paint oil base over water base, but not water base over oil base paint or stain. You can get water base stain.

I would check on this advice. I believe it is just the opposite. You can put latex (water based paint) over oil paint, but you cannot put oil based paint over latex. Oil paint must have a surface that it can seep into and it will not penetrate latex paint. Please check with people at your local hardware store. Good Luck either way!
