The 5 most common carpet repairs and how to prevent them with regular cleaning and maintenance.
Carpets are one of the most popular flooring materials in every home. They're comfortable, inexpensive and available in such a wide variety of colors and styles, there's no question why so many residents choose carpets for their houses. The downside is that the carpet is not the most durable flooring material. When you have a carpet for more than a few years, the chances are high that at some point you'll need to call for carpet repair. Homeowners who have a carpet that's seen better times should definitely consider the options available in carpet repair before choosing a carpet replacement or installing a different flooring material.

* The Most Common Carpet Repairs

One of the most common reasons to call for carpet repair is loose carpeting. It can take many forms and aside from the obvious symptom of carpet sliding where it's not supposed to, rippling and buckling can also occur. To fix this, your carpet simply needs to be re-stretched. Carpets can loosen over time, but in many cases the issues are caused by poor installation. If your carpet becomes loose only a few weeks after the installation, you should be able to get the company that did the work to fix it for free.

Carpet repair is often necessary to remove the very worst stains caused by tracked-in grime and dirt. In these severe cases, sections of the carpet may have to be removed and a new patch sewn on to completely remove the stain. However, you might consider installing a different flooring material (such as tile) right at the entrance of your home to prevent these kinds of stains, while keeping the look and feel of carpets in the rest of your house.

Snags and shedding are two other common carpet repair requests. If the carpet has just been installed, you can expect a certain amount of shedding. Basically, just keep vacuuming regularly and the shedding should stop. If shedding occurs long after the carpet was initially put, there's probably not much you can do. Runs and snags in your carpet can ruin the look of a room. In most cases these issues can be repaired inexpensively and quickly. However, whatever you do, don't pull on any offending carpet fiber, as it will only make the problem worse. In fact, it's best ot take a pair of scissors and cut the loose fiber off, so it doesn't get pulled on accidently.

* Carpet Repair And Replacement Costs

Carpet replacement is far less expensive than replacing any other flooring material, but it's not a cheap process and usually costs a few thousand dollars. However, if your carpet is more than ten years old, it's likely that it'll need to be replaced sooner rather than later, no matter how good your repairman is.

A well cleaned carpet can last for decades, even when it's in a high traffic area. A poorly maintained carpet might only last around five years before it becomes an eyesore. If you want to prolong its lifespan and keep its greatest appearance, your best bet is to vacuum the carpet at least once a week and have it professionally cleaned at least once a year.
