A relay within the operator is defective. This device not only turns on the light, but allows it to remain on for a preset amount of time to allow you to exit the garage before it turns off.

Depending on the age of the operator, it may not be worth fixing, however get the model number and manufacture name and Google it for parts on the internet or go to any garage door company that installs these units. ...»

If its a sears unit you can go to the parts store or online to order this part for replacement.

Just be sure that you UNPLUG the unit when you decide to work on it. If it turns on you can be seriously hurt real fast.

You would access this by removal of the entire cover that surrounds the operator. If your not comfortable in doing this, an appliance company can do this, but be prepared to spend just about as much as a new unit would cost.
