  • We removed the old blue laminate counters and installed Virginia Jet Mist granite and small marble subway tile backsplash. 3
  • New faucet is fun and instant hot water is awesome for tea time! 3
  • Waterstone Towson series
  • Lazy Susan's with magnetic spice jars in an otherwise waste of space are within easy visible reach with sliding ladder (or 6'2" cooking husband) and antique chicken feeder becomes a cook book library. 1
  • We removed vinyl and luan. The original hardwood was in bad shape and only in half of the kitchen due to an addition at some point in our old home's history.
  • Virginia Jet Mist granite - dark charcoal color with white veining, honed finish.
  • Big difference from what we started with! 1
  • Cabinets are painted with Benjamin Moore's Satin Impervo (color is Moonshine, actually gray/not white). We love the durable finish and that the grain still shows through. 2
  • An original pantry cupboard. We added a clock mechanism right into the door, numbers are vinyl. 2
  • The original single door was replaced with French doors letting in lots of natural light. 2
  • We love that the patio is right off the kitchen with a view of our 50' grape arbor/gazebo. Cleaning and entertaining are so convenient. 1
  • Kitchen before.
  • I love this old chunky piece as use as a Butler's pantry. Storage for good dishes, cookbooks and spices. 3
  • Decorative and functional.
  • Buffet/pantry.
  • Zero radius stainless steel sink.

We're in the process of transforming our kitchen on a budget to fit our style.

We painted cabinets, swapped out hardware, painted walls, installed new granite countertops, new zero radius sink and faucets, marble subway tile backsplash, removed vinyl and luan and ...»
opted for distressed bamboo when the old original wood floor didn't match up with the plywood addition, removed a pantry and installed a pot rack and French doors. We still need a stove backsplash, baseboards, DIY kitchen island and a larger refrigerator. This is our forever home and we love the change.

  • Dog gate built using shutters 4

My first share -- I wanted something a little nicer and more permanent than a baby gate to try and keep our three dogs

out of the living room. (One of the dogs is old and has ... problems of the floor-ruining sort.) I'd bought these old shutters at a yard sale a few months back and by attaching two and a half of them together and securing them at the top and bottom with trim, they made a perfect gate. Took less than an hour start to finish.

  • Kitchen Before
  • The Kitchen After - Six recessed cans and four halogen under-cabinet lights were sufficient lighting for the space with the dropped ceiling and all the light colored appointments.
  • The Focal Point Of The Kitchen (6x6 bone china field tile, iron gate deco's & 3x3 dots) The tile work is so exceptional, it was extended all the way to the top of the cabinets around the hood.
  • The oil rubbed bronze knobs provide a welcomed visual break from the cream tones in the cabinets and the tile, while the twisted wire style also toned down the modern feel of the stainless steel appliances.

The old kitchen was closed in, leaving the owners of this kitchen separated from their grandchildren while cooking and

playing. The new kitchen is classic, clean and upscale. It opens into the family room and boasts custom storage at kid level. The bone china field tile backsplash with iron gate decos is ...»
an understated yet stunning focal point for guests entering the kitchen.

This kitchen was a huge hit with it's owners, and their grandchildren, but what do you think of the muted tones? Calming and chic? Or muted and dull?

  • Helleborus x hybridus blooming in my garden in January.
Cut off old leaves that are damaged and new growth will quickly fill in. 1
  • Poet's Laurel, ( Danae racemosa ) evergreen shrub, great for dry shade Apply a one inch layer of mulch to keep soil from drying out too quickly. 1
  • Deciduous holly ( Ilex verticillata 'Winter Red' ) holds its fruit for months.
Plant one male pollinator nearby for best fruit display. 1
  • Cedrus deodara 'Divinely Blue.' This conifer is hardy to Zone 6 and provides color year around. Give plenty of space to grow.

  • White is a non color and has contradictory interpretations. In Western cultures it symbolizes innocence and purity, cleanliness. White means safety, purity, and cleanliness. White is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity. 15
  • Green is the color of nature symbolizing growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety and is believed to have great healing power. It is the most restful color for the human eye--can improve vision. 14
  • Red is a very emotionally intense color. It enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure. Red is the color of fire and blood, and is associated with energy, war, danger, as well as passion, desire, and love. 6
  • Blue represents peace, tranquility, and calm. Just the opposite, it also represents reverie, sadness, and melancholy. Blue also represents the sky, heavens, and the sea which is non ending, therefore it is often associated with depth and stability. 6
  • To the human eye, orange is a very hot color. Orange is associated with joy, sunshine, and the tropics. It represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, and encouragement. 6

Hi Hometalkers!

Check out my album of "bonus rooms" it's that one spare room in the house that can be used for just about anything! The question is, if you could transform your spare room into any of these, which one you choose?
