Paint colors

I'm redoing my bedroom and want some ideas on paint color but need light colors. I have a bookcase on one entire wall painted white and all trim in room is white. Help?

Hey Ann! This is just my thoughts but I would start by asking myself which colors am I more drawn to? "Warm" or "cool". Will you be using the same decor in the room & which color palette is it..."warm" or "cool" tones? If your room doesn't have alot of natural light, I would choose a cool color for sure. Warm colors tend to absorb the light, so this always helps me. I design & decorate in my spare time for people & have found this to be the start of any color choice. It's amazing to me how a "cool" tone just creates more light & also will neutralize warm tones in the room & just change the whole look in a room. (Note: if you are looking for a neutral color & not really a color like a blue or green...I love the Valspar color "Smoked Oyster"...it's a wonderful neutral). I would start at the paint store. Pick up all the color swatches that you are drawn to. I find that it helps me to actually take the colors into the room that I am going to paint.

What's your theme? I have lots of white in my bedroom and an ocean theme. The walls are a grey--lavender (could also use aquamarine) with a bedspread that has the same lavenders (and blues, etc) in it. This room is more feminine and its not a "nautical" theme which is too harsh for my taste. I've added a large basket containing large sea shells, a glass jar with aqua and clear glass (2") beads old paintings with ocean and sailboat scenes (soft colors, not nautical) and so forth.

Navy blue with white is sophisticated and striking. Mirrors and bits of silver on furniture legs and knobs or "dust collectors" as my x used to call them add a nice touch.

Are you completely changing out bedding and curtains? If not, depending on your theme, use a color wheel to find a color opposite your bedding and drop to lighter shade. Also consider your furniture. Use light color paint if furniture is medium to darker. Using medium tone paint with medium tone furniture fades everything together.
