Would help if you could provide a bit more info. What is under the paint? Fabric? Wood? Metal? Was the paint sealed over with anything (furniture wax is common) Have you tried anything yet? Made it better or worse?

i have collected Asian furniture etc over the past 35 years. This item is an Asian wedding box. I have one. They are very pricey. It did not come painted Like that. Someone did that. Underneath should have hand painted scenes and asian women . Very beautiful! So I would definitely remove the paint because it will be worth something in its original form , although you need to be very careful taking the paint off not to ruin the beauty underneath. It is worth nothing the way it is now. Perhaps steaming it off with a steamer or citstrip, which is a paint stripper that smells like orange. Just wipe off with water very quickly after each section you strip.

Unusual piece. What exactly is it? The only benefit in stripping it down would be to expose the original wood and you always run the danger of permanent damage and decrease in value. If you think it is valuable have it appraised if not just repainting to suit your taste would be my advice.

Gave it another look and think it may be some sort of bento box. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bento Hard to tell how large it is but I have seen a modern type that was large and multi level (used for picnics and/or "pot luck" type situations)....

@Mimi think you are right! think I'm going to try to strip the chalk paint off and maybe re stain it. really like the piece, any suggestions on what to do next

I am forever looking for more storage for jewelry and small accessories. Line the pieces in some velvet scraps? I was going to suggest a simple decoupage but since you are going to the trouble of removing the paint that would be silly wouldn't it lol....

How water-proof is it? Has it been waxed? If not, I'd use a soft scrub brush and some water - maybe a squirt of dawn dish soap per gallon - and scrub it (not immersed), then go over again with clear water and then dry it - If it's got wax, you'll have to use a solvent for the wax, 1 part vinegar to 3 parts warm-hot water. Just don't leave the water on the piece for too long.
