Window casings

Is it necessary to use wood on the inside of a window casing? Do people just trim the outside of the windows and entryways without the inner wood piece? I am guessing that it will have a more "finished" look but I am just wondering if people opt out of the inner wood piece.

We bought an older house that had it's windows trimmed with sheet rock. When we built our additions we used wood. In the long run the wood holds up better, looks nicer and for re-sale value would be better but if your trying to cut cost you could do the sheet rock and up-date to wood down the line.
