Can I apply joint compound over top of a plywood wall?

I recently took off some ugly panelling in my house and underneath was 5/8 plywood. I guess it had been a covered porch at one time and was added into the kitchen. So here's my question......can I just hand trowel drywall mud on to match the rest of the kitchen? It only has to last about a year or so until the remodel. So longevity isnt too much of a issue.

  • It probably won't even last a year, maybe try Rock Hard wood putty (though if you have a lot of temperature or humidity swings...) or better yet just add in some caulking (smooth out with a little water) , prime & paint

You could put 1/4 inch drywall over it, or I suppose you could fill the seams with wood filler (like you do on a subfloor you want to paint), sand and paint.

If it's a large area, you are going to have problems with smoothness. If that doesn't matter, sure why not? It's only for a year? Or perhaps cover it with corkboard for decoration? Easy way to thumbtack some décor!

You could wall paper it with clearance-priced paper...the previous owner had done that over panelling and it held up well.

Adhesion could be a problem. There may be something you can mix in to help. Also, if you get any ground movement you could get cracking as the plywood will have less flex than drywall.

Would drywall as suggested by b.enne.

I would stain or paint it and stencil with large wall stencils.
