Now they look gangly and sparse. I don't know how to prune them to bring back and can't find info.

Gangly says to me that they are stretching for the sun. Sparse could indicate lack of light also; and a need for food. A recent flush or black spot can cause sparseness. Choose a good rose food. Pruning is easier than you think. In summer a light cutting is all they need. Look for a swollen spot along the branch, that is a bud union. With sharp clean pruners, cut 1/4 inch above it at a 45 degree downward angle. New growth should come from there soon. If they are in the wrong spot, wait until fall to move they if you want to do so. If I could see a picture, it would help. Try YouTube for a video of summer pruning. There are lots of sights out there.

As Joycedp said, fertilize and treat for black spot if needed, a full pruning in February is a very good idea cut back to a foot or so and they will come out good asa new

There are many Garden sites, but I strongly recommend P Allen Smith.com. He's an expert & can advise you better -esp. for your area. I Do Know that you should prune them but how & when -I don't .Also- most roses like Banana Peel-buried just near the trunk of the tree/bush, but not too deep. They love the potassium in them. Good Luck with your roses.

Check to make sure that some insects are taking control. Prune to about 18 inches tall. You can't hurt them. They need a good fertilizer for blooming plants & roses. I cut my roses back about once a month. They are full & blooming like crazy. I do add Epsom Salt around them & throw coffee grounds out every week.
