Days of the Week Clothing Organizer

When my 3 year old started to have opinions about what he wants to wear, our morning routine suddenly became more complicated, and much more time consuming! I love that he has opinions, and I want to allow him to make some of his own decisions, but I don't love the melt downs that sometimes occurred when he would change his mind for the third time and I told him that we just don't have time to change again!
My son's closet doesn't exactly qualify as a walk-in, but there is a little more than a foot of depth in front of his hanging clothes. This left a space in the front corner of his closet that I knew we could put to good use.
I wanted to add some narrow shelves in this space - but I didn't want to block access to the clothes on the far left of each clothing rod. Finally, I found the perfect narrow shelf unit that is open on the sides, making it functional without taking up too much space.

I designed cute letters for each day of the week that I added to the back of each shelf. Follow the link at the end of this post for the full tutorial on how I added these letters, and for a two free downloadable versions of these letters {one in the colors shown, the other in pinks and purples}.
With the shelves labeled, I let my preschooler help to choose his clothes for the following week. We talked about the weather forecast and what kinds of clothes would be appropriate.

The new rule is that once the clothes are on the shelf, we can't change what we are wearing that day unless the weather changes. Since he does so well with rules and routine, I think this new system is going to make mornings much easier.

Two years ago I found that exact shelf unit next to the dumpster at work. It has been sitting unused in my spare room just waiting for this idea. The perfect solution for my small master walk-in closet Thanks for the inspiration.
