DIY Numbered Storage Bins

When designing my son's "big boy" room, I wanted to give him lots of storage for all of his toys, and I also wanted to make it easy for him to help clean up.
We placed two bookshelves along one wall of his room, and I decided to use the top row of each for books, and the bottom row for storage.

I found some bins that fit perfectly in the cubical openings of the bookshelf, but I wanted to add numbers to the front of each to help my then 2 year old learn his numbers and so that we could talk about which toys to put away where.

I chose to thick, durable fabrics that wouldn't fray when cut, and I created a paper template for each number. Then I cut the numbers out of the fabric and layered them together. Read the full tutorial on my blog {link at bottom} for the details of the fabrics used and how I affixed them together and to the bins.

Once the numbers were on the bins, we put them in place and filled them with toys.
These bins helped my son with his number recognition. He knows just what belongs in each bin, and he can articulate that that his animals belong in number 4, while his cars belong in number 6. He now loves putting away his own toys, which makes me a happy mom and keeps his room clean!

Angela,I spy a Sesame Street Playhouse that looks an awful like the one our 41 year old had! Is yours vintage or a newer version? Just curious. I like your project: cleaning, and learning all rolled into one!
