  • I started by removing the covers and washing them.
  • I labeled the "fluff" taken from the back cushions so I wouldn't get confused when it was time to re-stuff.
  • I used this quilt batting ($9.99 at Walmart) to beef up the cushions.
  • I simply trimmed the batting and wrapped it around the bottom cushions to boost their fluff-ability. Yep. That's the technical term. ;)
  • I put the covers back on the new beefed-up cushions and now my couch looks as good as new.

YES! It's The SAME Kitchen!

Dark. Cluttered. Busy. Out-dated. All words the owners used to describe their old kitchen. Today it's light, open and welcoming! The neutral palette leaves it open for the owner's to use ...»
color however they like! The custom detail on the drawers, cabinets, hood and cabinetry furniture base give the kitchen a very luxurious feel. The dishwasher is hidden, the storage space is accessible and customized and the clients are deliriously happy!

  • The red base coat shows through nicely on this pine dresser.
  • However the overall look is streaky and muddy looking. What am I doing wrong?

Furniture Revivals: Dark Wax Failure

After having tried dark wax to get a deeper look to ASCP Graphite, I'm giving up. It always turns out streaky. What do you do to get an more even look?

  • "Before" ~ a few shrubs and tons of ivy and pachysandra. The side and backyards were so depressing I don't even have true "Before" pictures! 2
  • "After" ~ added and enlarged flower beds, arbors, a gazebo and other garden accents enhance the landscape. 8
  • "After" ~ a side yard full of ivy becomes a gazebo garden.
  • "Before" ~ side yard looks bleak even after ivy was cleared, a mulch path put in and new fencing for the dogs put up.
  • "After" ~ the garage is now a garden room, and a shade garden, deck and arbor have been added.
  • "After" ~ Three dead trees cut down and new flower beds and mulched paths made.

5 Years ~ Before & After in Our Fairfield Garden

Hard to believe but we just marked our fifth anniversary in our "new" old house. Many , many projects later, we still have a few major improvements to finish. This spring is exterior ...»
painting and new garage doors, but we are hiring those done. Even though I'm a good painter and have painted houses before , inside and out, my ladder days are over!

For me, the most rewarding changes have been accomplished in the landscape. My best friend teased the daylights out of me when we bought a house with "tortured shrubbery" (clipped into box and spiral shapes). But it was a half acre after a tiny lot and, even though two-thirds of it was covered in ivy and pachysandra, I knew there was a wonderful garden waiting to happen. And, there was a garden shed and an extra garage on the back of the house to store all my garden tools, pots and whatnot!

  • The space was originally 2 separate rooms-a tiny toilet, shower, single sink and a vanity area. We removed the wall and 2 closets to make one open space. 2
  • Because this was a total DIY project, we were able to complete a much higher end looking bathroom for $7,000. 1
  • These mirrors (from Lowes) and sconces (from Home Depot) were both very affordable options and I love the look they create in the bathroom. 2
  • The pedestal tub is my favorite addition to the space.

DIY Master Bathroom

We completely renovated a 1980's outdated master bathroom (think metallic wallpaper) and created a tranquil space to escape my 3 boys! The post on my blog contains many of our sources.

Updating a Wreath With Cupcake Liners

I had this wreath from last year and I've updated it for various seasons. I wanted a wreath that could last through the next few patriotic holidays. I took my wreath and added some cupcake liners that I bought on clearance after last year's Fourth of July festivities.

Installing a (Manufactured) Rain Harvesting Barrel

I installed half round gutters and corrugated downspouts on my house recently ... (I have an old house and I wanted to maintain this look). As I was doing this, and since I knew I had ...»
some nearby yard work planned, I incorporated a rain barrel.

After some research (through which I learned there is no shortage of techniques for making rain barrels nor in the shear number of rain barrels now on the market), I chose a 60 gallon rain barrel made by a company called EarthMinded. I picked it because 1) it looked good 2) it was comparatively large 3) it looked easy to install and 4) it could be bought through a local conservancy that subsidized the barrels bringing their cost down.

With rain barrels (like real estate) location location location is everything. Screened (at least partially) from the road, I set the barrel just downhill of last year's Vinca planting and just uphill from a bit of grass I intended to overseed (I completed this this past weekend and plan to post on it). I purchased 2 bags of pea gravel, used scrap (ground-contact-rated) 4x4s (further treated) and a spare piece of blue stone. Together, this/these provided a solid, level and elevated base (all very important).

Assembling and installing the barrel was a snap (Earthminded's instructions were excellent) BUT I did have to request beforehand a kit that would work with my new round downspouts.

I may write more about this project on my blog in the coming weeks but for now if you have questions, don't be afraid to ping me. Thanks for reading. ~jb

Scrap Wood Vase... Easy and FREE!

with the wood sleeve. This took me around an hour start to finish and I love it! If you don't have scrap wood laying around, the cost of wood is still under $8. You can see the full tutorial at http://www.shanty-2-chic.com/2013/04/scrap-w...
