Pet stains

I have a carpet that a sick cat threw up on a number of times. I have been unable to remove the stain, I figure the dye in the food stained the carpet. Then a family member took a steamer to it thinking it might lift the stain. Anyone have any suggestions as the carpets are only a few years old.

Have u tried peroxide and baking soda or vinegar and baking soda? I've used the vinegar and bsoda for little kid throw up and it worked good, I don't know if there is a difference, I'd think little kid puke might be harder to work out of a rug bc of milk, AND smell... Lol, I could throw up thinking about! But, the woman that owned the daycare my son went to told me about that. Hope it helps!

You should contact your insurance company and see if they will cover replacement. I had a client whose child spilled paint on carpeting and the company replaced all the carpeting in the entire house as it all was the same in the house. That might be excessive but perhaps would replace it in that one room.

@Mary-Ann Most homeowner policies will NOT cover damage caused by pets, but it's worth a try

if it's a stain and the carpet is not actually damaged, some of that enzyme cleaner for pet stains from the pet store will do the trick. It even gets blood and other organic stains out of clothes!

This comment has nothing to do with the carpet but your cat. My 14 year old was throwing up all the time, she was even getting sores around her head, she was losing weight slowly but then it became more noticeable. She threw up right from when she was a kitten but more often in later years. Turned out that she needed grain free moist cat food. WOW what a difference she never throws up, sores are healed and have never returned and she has gained her weight back and has almost turned back into a kitten. So not sure if your cat has this problem but I was told that since a kitten that some cats a prone to throwing up, this changed all of our lives especially hers. So incase this sounds like your cat or anybody reading this, an older cat needs more protein and moisture. Good luck on carpet in Canada we have a product called Folex that worked very good.

@Deborah Litt Stevenson Sorry to hear about your loss, they are family no matter what it still hurts. I know that the Folex is available at Canadian Tire.

Mix 1/3 cup white vinegar with 2/3 cup of warm water. We put this in our carpet cleaner and the spot came right out. I have friends that own a carpet cleaning business and they use this all the time. Works every time!!

I have far more experience with this problem (and pets stains, in general) than I care to admit. Please read my 3 comments in this post for the products I use to successfully remove stains. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/clean/house/q-how-to-get-out-a-carpet-stain-5690037

I love Spot Shot. You spray it on and lift the stain out using white cloth. I use paper towels. Keep pressing and lifting until the stain is gone. With four long haired cats, we have a lot of upchucking on my area rugs so I have a lot of experience. When this happens again, let the upchuck dry before attempting to clean it. I know this sounds gross, but if you tent a piece of paper towel over it so as not to step on it, when it's dry, most will flake off. If you have woven area rugs, like I do now, you'll may have to use a stiff bristle brush to get it all. It does work though.
