I use any type of container with a hole in the bottom, or hubby drills a hole with his diamond ceramic/glass drill. I use potting mix, like Miracle Grow, and I add from 25% - 50% crushed rock like "Dry Stall" which is sold in my area for horse stalls in 40# bags for about $11. Pea gravel would also work. Perlite works but tends to "float " up..so I like the heavier type better. The amount I use depends on how dry the plant needs to stay...more for lithops, or crested cacti types...less for aeoniums and other succulents that like a bit more water retention. Most succulents like 1/2 strength fertilizer 1 x a month in the growing season. I also give mine some worm castings, 1 teaspoon in a 4 inch pot 1-2 times a year...and for faster growing ones, a few rabbit beans.... for great wide spectrum fertilizer. I order mine from www.IvoryFarms.com Most succulents love morning sun, and afternoon shade or filtered shade like from under a tree. Each is different, always increase sun gradually as to avoid sunburn, and just check each type online for listed sun demands. Most succulents need winter protection, and window light won't be enough so consider a greenhouse or other supplemental greenhouse type lighting...full spectrum sun light bulbs. They can be made cheaply with metal flashing and full spectrum spiral bulbs. PS. I'm the President of the Stockton Cactus and Succulent Society, and a UC Davis Master Gardener.
