How do I trim and partially remove my carpet?

Hello!
I'd like to reduce the carpet around my entryway. I believe the carpet is nailed onto the wooden floor, with foam padding underneath.

Is there way that I can trim/cut the carpet myself, so the edges would be perpendicular to the walls? Is there a specific tool I should use? Or is there a particular way that'll help me cut it cleanly?

  • First pull the carpet & pad back in the area you want - apply tackstrip where needed (and z-bar if that is how you are finishing the edge) Most of us use a double bladed utility knife to trim carpet but a regular utility knife works just fine. We use a carpet stretcher / knee kicker to set the carpet & then trim it approx. 1/4 to 1/2 an inch past that depending on the transition piece we are using

Once you pull the carpet back, carefully remove the tackstrip that is there. Pull the carpet and pad back to the point you wish to stop. I would slide a piece of wood under the carpet, place a straight edge down (like a board) and cut following the straight edge with a carpet knife. With the board underneath you won't damage (score) your floor.I have also taken a hot glue gun to the cut edge to keep from fraying. When in doubt...ask a carpet man in Lowes or a carpet store what they would recommend.

Removing the old stuff yourself is a smart move. Before you begin tearing up carpet, I think you should talk with your installer to find out exactly how much you will save by doing the tear-out yourself. Your installer can also give you advice on handling any unusual situations in your home and what to do with the old carpet. This article has some nifty tips that will save your back and make the job go quicker. This is the best I have ever seen, you did a beautiful job!
