Can 18x18 ceramic tiles be installed in the shower area?

Can 18x18 ceramic tiles be glued in the shower area over moisture resistant wall board just like any other tiles or would they be too heavy and fall off, would cement boards be better.

Thinset - Yes Mastics & other materials - NO Moisture Resistant or other "sheetrock" - NO unless you have covered it with Schluter or other similar product "Cement board" is better but also not waterproof & must be protected like sheetrock (at least the seams Size of the tiles - doesn't matter on the walls - seen 2'x2' & larger tiles used
