DIY Industrial Throw Blanket Holder/Ladder

I love the idea of the plumbing pipes for industrial decor, I've seen it lots of places lately. So I decided to jump on board and create a holder for my throw blankets. So, I headed to Lowes and laid out a bunch of pipes until I had a plan. Pipes can be found in the plumbing section and they have a variety of sizes to play with.
I came home a put the pieces together. It took quite a bit of twisting and turning, but I just powered through. I ended up with a couple of stained hands :).
Once I had it all together, I sanded it all down and spray painted the whole thing with about 3 coats of the Rustoleaum Metallic Oil Rubbed Bronze Spray Paint. I love that stuff! Then, I used screw in dry wall anchors to the wall.
Thanks for following and stop by the blog for more details including a breakdown of pieces you'll need to build one yourself!

When making a "square" with the pipes, how to you get the threads to screw into tees on both sides? Doesn't one side of the rung back out of the fitting when you try to twist it into the other side? I would like to make a ladder for my son's loft bed using this type of ladder but I can't seem to wrap my head around how that would work and be threaded tightly... please help!

  • Great question! And you are right, it does "unthread". However, I started from the inside (if that makes since) and threaded everything on one side as far in as it would go. Then, when you do the other side, you can "unthread" it half way and it's still pretty strong. Honestly I just sort of played around until it was tight enough, but it did take some elbow grease and finagling. I would love to see the ladder if you work it out! Sorry I don't have a better solution, but the threading on most pipes is enought that even halfway it's still pretty solid.

    • @Crystal That is a GREAT idea! I also used a tape mesh that goes on flexible, but hardens like steel, that might work too? But you can see it, so that might be weird. I can't wait to see the bed, I'm building loft beds too, but not until after Christmas, haha!
