Anyone recognize this wicker chair? Who made it? When was it made?

I bought this chair for $12.00. Before I clean it up and restore what I think is the original finish. It's a beautiful chair on its way to being an awesome chair.

I am not an expert but that looks an awful lot like a woven grass fiber material. Is it pliable and slightly soft? If it is hard it may be woven split rattan like a set of mine compliments of Pier One. It does not look like "wicker" to me- sorry.

You will rarely see wicker done on a big profile chair. My first thought was an old Bombay Collection piece. However they stayed in business only until World Market and Pier 1 had expanded.

I'm going to guess this is an older/similar version of this Pier 1 banana leaf chair. http://www.pier1.com/King-Armchair---Brown/2307229,default,pd.html?cgid=natural-chairs#nav=left&cgid=natural-chairs&start=1 As you can see, the Pier 1 chair I linked to also has the wooden seat, as do many of the Pier 1 chairs made of this banana leaf material (vs. similar chairs from other retailers, like Pottery Barn, where the seat is made of the same woven material instead of wood). Once you get your chair refurbished, I bet one of Pier 1's replacement seat cushions would fit your chair perfectly. The Pier 1 site says this about banana leaf: "Banana leaf furniture is made from natural banana leaf or abaca fibers that are dried, twisted and braided into a rope. The rope is then woven over a frame to create furniture and basketry." Some people also call this type of woven furniture "seagrass." And as an aside, I can't help but wonder...WHY and HOW do people beat their stuff up so badly? Sheeesh! I've got furniture that I've had for 40 years that doesn't look like this! This is a nice chair and I'm sure it cost several hundred dollars when it was new so it just boggles my mind someone could/would do this much damage to a piece of furniture that probably really isn't that old.

check out pier 1 there are some in catalogs and some at their stores.. doesn't seem to be antiques but maybe 10 years old?

I agree it's more than likely from Pier 1 or maybe World Market. Great chair, whether or not it's an antique. The grass/bark, there are many different natural sources often grouped under the term "wicker". This one appears to be of a type that can be delicate, so I'd be careful how you clean it.There used to be cleaners for mini blinds you could spray on, let sit a bit and then spray off. If you can find something like that, and they need a deeper cleaning than vacuuming, I'd go that way. Possibly even just spraying with a fine mist from your garden hose and dry outside in a warm spot out of direct sunlight. Have you picked fabric for a new cushion yet?

@You're very welcome Robert. I'll be looking forward to seeing it when you finish it up. It's an awesome looking chair.

Looks like a 1920's style, woven sea grass chair. If the weave is firm and tight, probably a reproduction. If it's soft and yielding could be older. Did it come with a cushion? it may help to narrow the search. By your comments, I assume it's a newer chair. It may have been bought by a hotel chain as lobby or veranda seating as well; you may be able to find something down that avenue..It's a gorgeous chair! Great find for $12.00!

I have a chair a lot like this from Pier 1 and it is a little darker color it is a banana leaf or sea grass material. I am also trying to re do mine and having issues with how to strip the dark finish off the sea grass. Any ideas?
