Using ceramic 12X12 tiles for patio

Does anyone know how I could use regular ceramic tiles to make a large patio. I will have to build up the area at least 2" first then lay the tiles. Could I just lay them on a well packed sand base or would I have to use something else under them. I hate to have to buy pavers since I have about 400 12X12 tiles I need out of my way.

Ceramic tile will crack if not supported. Laying it on sand will not work. Also, ceramic tile is usually slick and could be a safety hazard when wet.

I agree, you would need to pour a cement slab first to support the tiles.

Sell the tiles on Craigs list and buy the pavers or patio stones and build your patio. That's my advice, or use them in your home. Good luck.
