How to make a "Little Free Library" box

by Suzanne
I'd like to have a "Little Free Library" box to share books with my neighbors. The boxes I see for sale online are very, very expensive. Does anyone have an idea what I could use to make a weather-proof box to share books? Should have a plexiglass see-through door in the front, and be able to hold about 10 books at a time.

@Cynthia H I've seen this website but the actual boxes are very expensive. I was hoping to get an idea to make one myself out of something else, Repurposing.

Google Free library box and select images. Lots of ideas. You could take an old suitcase and paint it. Old Newspaper dispenser. Milk crate -- lots of ideas.

I tried to get some people to help build one for me, but after months with nothing, I ended up buying a decorative box from Home Goods store and using it. Also saw ideas of using an old newspaper box - might want to call your newspaper to see if they have any they no longer want.

You could look for a free or very inexpensive piece of furniture, which you can modify to make a cute and weather tight library box.

I would just use a plastic bin that you can purchase anywhere for under $10. But a better idea would be to start a book club of sorts and have a little "afternoon tea" to host for neighbors.

My first thought was an old bread box. You'd have to paint it and protect the wood with a good exterior quality Polyurethane though. I've thought of doing this in our little neighborhood too, but too many other projects going on. I figured I'd do so when I came across my old wood breadbox somewhere in the basement.
