One time when I was having an illness I hired a housekeeper for a while. She used one of those Mr.Clean magic eraser sponges for bathrooms and I was shocked at how clean it got!

Mix a cup of Dawn liquid detergent, the blue one, with a couple cups cleaning vinegar. Paint itall over the tub, inside and out. Let it sit for a couple of hours. You can keep adding more of the solution if it dries out. Afterward, scrub with a green scrubber pad, rinse and the soap scum, hard water, etc. will wash off. Use a Mr. Clean magic eraser scrubber if there are any stubborn spots. If there are rust stains left, use a rust remover product. Polish with any commercial product made for that purpose. Most of the build up that causes the dullness is from the combination of mineral deposits and soap scum. It hardens and is terrible to get off. The Dawn/vinegar solution has been the savior for my cast iron tub.

DO you have a vintage cast iron tub??--check the cost for a professional to help. There are several companies that come to your home and will re-finish. This finish will last for a few years. Compare that cost with replacement with the same like tub (cast iron). Let us know your final decision.
