Painting laminated bookshelves

by Karen
They are tall white laminated particle board bookcases from office supply store. In order to use in s different room than I did originally, I want to paint a dark color to coordinate with cabinets in adjacent kitchen. Please post advice on prep and type of paint to use. Or could I prime and stain the primer coat?

Have you considered maybe using a wallpaper or contact paper? I think good results with painting will be difficult. I asked my husband, the wood worker/builder, and he was hesitant. He thought it might work to rub it down with acetone (nail polish remover) and fine steel wool, then wipe that off well, and try to paint. If you decide to try that, I would find an inconspicuous spot to try first. Good luck.

If it's laminated the one thing you need to do is lightly sand it so the paint will have something to hold to.

Karen, spray paint adheres to just about anything, so that's what I would recommend. I've used it on a number of small projects including this cabinet. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/-3007335

Thank you to all who so quickly responded. Becky, I love what you did with your cabinet and it gave me some additional ideas about what to do with my bookcases. I'm planning to add doors to at least some of the shelf areas, to hide whatever is stored inside for a less cluttered look. Bead-board would solve several issues, including providing a bit more depth at the front where doors are installed. And I did consider trying to "mod podge" fabric onto the sides and shelves, but figured the glue might not stick to laminate. The Contact paper is a viable idea ... I recently got two really unusual, beautiful designs from a special sale somewhere online -- I may go looking for more in the color range I want for this project. Thanks again to you all!

@I glad I could help Karen. I really enjoy making flat packed furniture look more substantial by adding details to them.
