Should we replace the wall guard behind the fireplace?

We live in a 30 year old Lindel cedar home in Hawai'i. Cedar is wonderful to combat the moisture/humidity here in the mountains. When we purchased the house 15 years ago, everything was brown; brown carved shag carpeting, brown tiles, brown wallpaper, brown varnished walls. I have replaced almost everything and now am working on the fireplace. It is needed in the winter here, it can get cold and damp. I painted the tiles around the fireplace, first primed with 3 coats of primer and then painted a soft grey to match the counter-tops in the adjoining kitchen area. I have removed all the shiny silver ornaments from the fireplace and scrubbed the fireplace, it's nice and clean and looks lovely in a minimalist fashion. But...But...BUT!!! I have always hated the copper wall guard, I would like to install a soft grey stone wall...any suggestions, any thoughts?

@Etoile Aloha I love copper, send it to me! ; ) I wouldn't think removing the copper & replacing it with a stone would be a problem, just be sure the stone you use is rated for use as fireproofing around a wood stove / fireplace. As for the copper, be sure to take it & sell it to a scrap metal place or whatever, copper is expensive! :)

    I agree 100% with Katrina.

Mahalo Katrina and Becky, I understand that you two like copper but alas it may look lovely in Texas and Nebraska, but in Hawai'i, in the tropics it just doesn't seem to appeal to me. I will consider the options more. We have not used the fireplace in a few years, it is so warm here. Mahalo/Thanks again!

@Katrina Warren Mahalo Katrina for your wonderful words; since I have painted the tiles, the copper is not so bad.

I love copper too but I see what you are saying. The corner seems a little heavy. Maybe put something on the wall above the copper panels balancing the corner.

I would do a stack stone veneer and replace the tile floor with a coordinated slate in big tiles.

Try oxidizing the copper to give it an aged patina. That will give it a softer appearance. Check your local craft store or internet for supplies/instructions.

I agree with Maggie that you need to soften the copper finish on the wall guard by oxidizing, so it gives it that aged patina look.

You can google how to do a faux copper patina - it's very easy to get good results, and would look 100% authentic on the copper. I wouldn't be inclined to replace with stone or tiles; I think it woul be too much of the same thing as your brick.

make sure when you do change any wall covering that you have a fire wall board to protect from fire....the stone idea is a beautiful idea. It brings the outdoors in....

Do you like the earth tones? Tiki wood inlay and a coat of complementary wall paint in the room. Another idea would be to build a false wall to hide the pipe and create a "fireplace insert look" (with a mantel if you want). Copper could then stay looking as a fire wall inside a fire place for contrast. Might be able to get a good price for the copper sheets. Hope I happen by your updated post, its a charming little cozy corner.

I wonder if you could change the color of the copper with stained glass solder type patina chemicals ?
