Painted buffet

Question

Several weeks ago, you showed an awful buffet that was refinished to match one in a store.  I saved the picture, but not the name of the woman who did it. I have an old dining room table and buffet that I would like to do this on.  I need to know the colors that she used.  She started with yellow, she said.  I have spent week looking for books on wood refinishing, but, no luck. Please Help!!

Hi Patty. Though I haven't done anything exactly like this I have refinished a lot of furniture over the years and have gotten pretty good at being able to figure out the colors & techniques used to achieve a specific result. My opinion if that the piece pictured was painted a dark cream with maybe an extra bit of yellow ( I like to mix my own paints) with stain added once it's dry. I would try pouncing the stain on with a piece of bunched up rag, For the special effects try 'painting' the swirls in the wet stain using a dry, rounded, artist brush though you might need to quickly wipe the removed stain off the brush after each swipe. Gel stain dries slowly which would give you extra time for the 'painting'. You could also try a rich, brown paint but you would need to add blending gel to extend the drying time. Once the piece is dry give it lots of distressing with fine sandpaper. For distressing with a more authentic appearance I've had good results wet sanding over chalk paint. (Once the paint is dry just rub with a wet rag.) When I'm trying something new I always practice on some scrap wood till I get it just right. This is a particularly beautiful piece and seeing it has made me want to try it for myself. Sorry this so long. Hope it helps.
