I just moved into my home and the kitchen has a metallic backsplash that doesn't work in the space.

The wall behind it is completely unfinished though and I am on a tight budget. Are there any options to paint it or replace it that won't be expensive?

Diane...a tiled backsplash is a good basic low cost project...because they are relatively small...even if you choose to use higher end materials the cost can be kept down.

Check out this article I wrote on backsplashes.

Like KMS stated, tile splash can be a low cost project. I like the look and cost effectiveness of 3X6 subway tiles. They are simple to install, readily available, come in tons of colors, and pretty inexpensive if you don't go out and buy handmade tiles...Small grout joints keep this looking great over time too, easy to clean. I usually set them with 1/16" grout joints. Good luck!

I agree! one of my favorites for back-splashes are the small tiles that come pre-affixed to a net or on mesh backing usually in 1 to 2 foot squares. some of the tiles come on paper backing too. There are several video on the web that will walk you through the process and it's moderately easy and quick.
