How much do painters charge? I've always done my own painting.

But now, due to being a professional procrastinator, I think the only way I'll get my projects done is to pay someone else to do it. I have NO idea how much this kind of thing costs. Can anyone give me ideas? Do painters determine cost by square feet or what? I have a bedroom that's maybe 12 x 16 that needs painting. I don't think it will need a primer coat because the current color is light and the new one is also about the same hue and they're both satin finish. Ideally, I'd also like the ceiling painted. It's the 70s spackled kind. See photo. How can I know that someone I'd hire would do a good job? I've seen some up close views of paint jobs on HGTV that were very sloppy. Furniture would have to be moved away from the walls.

In my area (Alabama) painters can be hired to work by the day ($375) - you provide the paint and they do as much as they can in 8 hours. I recently had most of my upstairs and downstairs done in one day because I was using almost the same color. If you are changing color it would probably mean they could do less in a day because it would almost certainly take two coats. Other painters I have hired just came and gave me an estimate for the entire job. I like the by the day method better. Sorry, no experience with painting the textured ceiling.

@Phala Patton-Reed wow 375 for the day sounds super expensive to me plus paint. easily over 400.

Look in your local paper or yellow pages or on internet...call a few and get estimates which are free. We just had our master bedroom and bath repainted but had to have wallpaper removed in both rooms as well...just repainting is not that costly...just get some estimates and go with a reputable company you feel comfortable with...best of luck!

Our favorite painter charges 45$ an hour. He's super quick and very efficient. I live in British Columbia Canada

My son is a painter and you can't believe the jobs he has been hired to repainted, becuz the guy b4 him did such a terrible job. I recommend getting a painter that comes recommend and pay good money for a good job. 😊

I'm a professional procrastinator too, but I'd never pay someone to do something as easy as simply painting a room! I'm also a professional penny pincher! LOL.........

@Louise If you are procrastinating, paint on a day when you would least likely paint, like when the sun is not shining outside. Good luck!

My husband (54), my younger son (24) and I (59) painted our combo living room/kitchen-dining room (about 24x22 with 14' cathedral ceiling) just this past weekend. My son and I did the taping, small rolling and cutting in, hubby did major rolling on ceiling and larger walls. It looks great, but we all said "never again...never again."

If you hire the job done and you have been doing it yourself, you can save money if the job is ready to go. Room cleaned out, walls bare, if you can, taped, but most painters will want to tape themselves. Professional painters are fast and quick. In my younger life my wife and I could do two rooms start to finish in one day. Today due to old age and old knees, we can't. A professional painter takes about two hours start to finish, walls, baseboards, and crown molding. Taping to clean-up. Between $75 to $150? Depends on availability, how starving the painter is, and make sure he is able to give references. Get two or more bids and be honest with what you'll do so they know how much time to allot. We even take and replace the ceiling fans for him. If you have more than one room, you will save money per room if you ask.
