Flooring question

The former owner installed ceramic tile that looks like slate but isn't and has no sheen, it always looks dirty, etc.. It probably wasn't sealed either because the grout lines stay filthy no matter what I scrub it with. I'd love the new ceramic tile that looks like stone but do I have to remove all the old tile? Is there anything that can float on it? The floors are also heated. Thanks!

If the tiles are not broken or shifted, you can tile over them, but that will raise the floor a little.

Do it right and pull up the old tile. Otherwise, you'll regret it for years.

try using a concrete sealer on the existing tiles before removing them. It's kinda like a heavy duty mop-n-glo.....very easy to use. They have both a matte and "wet" look....sealer. I love the wet look one.

A flooring expert recommended the baking soda/peroxide combo to me. It takes some elbow grease but works like magic. The best sealer I have found is SurfaceGard Maximum Strength Sealer. It protects stone and grout against stains. Great for high traffic areas. Easy to apply. I got the spray bottle and was done in no time. Make sure you follow the instructions carefully. Instead of removing your tiles, you can also regrout them and then seal properly.

Thanks! Tried the baking soda fix bug no change. So disgusted with the look of the tiles after washing them.

@Susan Cryor Thanks! I use Zep cleaner from HD on slightly dirty grout and it worked great. I will retry the peroxide fix and see. HOPE!!!
