Teak table needs refinish

Okay, I have this old childhood desk and it's teak. I want to just sand down the top so, I put some 60 grit paper on the sander and started, ugh ugh. Now I've stopped and it looks patchy dark red in some spots and brown in another. What should I be doing besides crying and thinking ive totally messed up?

I would apply some teak oil and let it sit for awhile.Once dried it may possibly cover up the unevenness.

There are products for wood to even out the stain colors. Go to your local paint store.

First, 60 grit is too rough. Sand next with 200 grit and then 300. This should get the top pretty smooth. Now LIGHTLY, try the teak oil (or lemon oil, cheaper) and see what you get. If it looks good, go ahead and finish with superfine sandpaper and then oil to your heart's content!
