Hi, I have a kitchen from the late 70s which has a laminate top and attached eating area in a golden oak fake color, ugh. I need some ideas what to paint the kitchen walls and cupboards.I like the color green but don't have any ideas what shade would look good? The floor also is a golden brownish color. I have a lot of cabinets and would like the room to feel inviting like a nature theme what could I do ?

Here in the USA, you can go and get paint samples for $5. I really wanted a turquoise wall (say it in a magazine and thought it was lovely) so I tried samples on white poster board and looked at the colours over the course of the day and night. Light can affect the hue. I like your idea of green and I really like sage green. As for the laminate counter tops; you can paint them also. I did with ours. Behr primer and then paint and then a shellac coating. We went from faded ugly yellow to black marble. It was amazing until I grew tired of it and repainted it a soft grey. Paint, nowadays, can change almost anything. Good luck, and hope to hear an update and maybe some spectacular photos.

Sherwin williams has a green I fell in love with Majolica Green...its nuetral enough to go with almost every color. Sherwin Williams sells at Lowes for a little over 4.00 for a big sample. I got it with the colors Muslin that I am going to paint some tall pantry cabinets and a rolling under counter storage and work space cart..and Macadamia that will be for a coffee station. https://www.google.com/search?q=majolica+green+sherwin+williams&biw=1221&bih=571&tbm=isch&imgil=o1vk50J_sx633M%253A%253BhKWf_KO0yIdxaM%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.zillow.com%25252Fdigs%25252Feclectic-sw-majolica-green%25252F&source=iu&pf=m&fir=o1vk50J_sx633M%253A%252ChKWf_KO0yIdxaM%252C_&usg=__E3JPN5ZZ71z_B74by2BOMrAQIGs%3D&ved=0CEYQyjdqFQoTCN61guPIj8cCFYIbkgodSocGFA&ei=zMLAVd6fDYK3yATKjpqgAQ#imgrc=o1vk50J_sx633M%3A&usg=__E3JPN5ZZ71z_B74by2BOMrAQIGs%3D

Maybe you could change that countertop first as you don't like it? Then you can decide on the rest of the kitchen colors. Here is Debbie Travis instructions...You can paint over laminate as long as you apply a high qualitycounter with a heavy duty cleanser such as TSP, then sand lightly and wipe clean. Apply a high adhesion primer and allow to dry and cure overnight. To avoid brush marks, apply the primer and two base coats of paint with a low-pile roller or a sponge brush. Brush in one direction, and don't overload your roller or brush. Allow the paint to dry between coats. Seal with two or three coats of varnish in the sheen of your choice. The higher the sheen, the more durable the finish -- an important factor for a busy counter beside a sink. Water-based paints and sealors will feel dry to the touch in about four hours, but allow the counter to harden or cure for a minimum of four or five days before you use it. There are paints designed specifically to cover laminate surfaces. Melamine paint is one that works well, but is not readily available in the U.S. I just discovered a new laminate coverup paint system that comes in a kit; it's called Giani Granite Paint Kits for Countertops, and it is specifically designed to produce the look of expensive granite. There's a range of popular granite shades: Sicilian Sand, Chocolate Brown, Bombay Black, Roma Red and so on. The process is simple, and the kits come complete with primer, basecoat, mineral colours, urethane top coat and the tools you require to apply the paint technique. Check out their website www.gianigranite.com. You'll find stainless steel paint on the site as well. To access a store locator near you for both the Giani Granite Paints and the Stainless Steel paint, visit www.liquidstainlesssteel.com/stores. one thing that I know for certain is that when you change one thing in whatever room that you are redoing, you won't be able to stop there! We did a complete kitchen remodel and I was only going to redo my floor! we did the floor in a bamboo wood which I love! then because the countertops were a grayish green to match the rest of the house we redid the countertops with a granite to highlight the color of the floor and last but not least we painted the kitchen with above the wainscoting a " browned butter" and the bottom a deeper brown. It turned out beautiful, but it was definitely a process!

Use Giani Granite paint for the countertops and Giani cabinet paint for the cabinets. The granite paint is very easy to use (it comes with a DVD with instructions). You may need to order it online. It is much less expensive than the Rustoleum brand (can be found at Home Depot) and, I think, looks much better. I have done over many kitchens and bathrooms with the Giani paint products and love them.
