I have the same look also and the cabinets are alright, but the tile countertops look terrible. They are starting to chip and the grout is missing on a lot of them which makes them always look dirty. Anybody have any suggestions on how to do countertops the very cheapest way to go? Help!! Thanks, Judy

Oh my, I adore oak wood but hat these cookie cutters cabinets! However, oak is beautiful painted black. Why not do a worn black paint on the cabinets and stay with the white tile counters. Paint the white fridge with chalkboard paint to blend in and add some bright and strong color with accessories.

Floor tile is pretty cheap, and Lowes has some really nice tile for abt $.78 a 12x12 tile. Use a dark grout. My son did his counter tops in cement, for a pretty reasonable sum. Videos on UTube will help. Good luck

What you are describing is more 1950's style. Here is a link for French Country Kitchenshttp://www.cnbhomes.com/country-french-kitchens/. Countertops is not a place to go inexpensive, for it is where the most wear occurs other than floors in the kitchen. You want to choose a color that is timeless, so if you choose to change color schemes down the road or sell your home the countertop will go with the design concept. Actually bathrooms and kitchens should be done in timeless colors and designs, so by changing accessories and paint, these rooms can transition to what ever design concept someone has, for remodeling these rooms is where you will always spend the amount of money.

When we redid our kitchen, we had the same kind of cabinets - oak fronts but veneered backs. We just painted them - 2 coats of Glidden Gripper primer and then 2 coats of a creamy white (Valspar Oyster Pearl) Then antiqued them by taking a dark brown mixed with glaze - brush on in the crevices and wipe off - be careful of the brown though - the first color we used came out PINK when we wiped it off! We punched the middles out of 4 of the top doors and inserted a wavy, antique-style glass. Oil rubbed bronze hardware. We redid the old formica counters but we did granite tile (24" x 24") instead of slabs. Tiny black grout lines (we went with a black and dark green granite) and for about $1600 we redid the entire kitchen! Granite tile is much cheaper than going with the slabs - or you could even paint the tiles black and do a faux finish. Just be sure to give it several coats of poly to seal them.

I agree with Linda, the last place you want to skimp is on the quality of your counter-top. Granted, it's ultimately a matter of personal choice, making an educated decision by weighing the pros/cons/pricing should be considered. Here is a comparison article that might interest you: http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/1623075/list/kitchen-countertops-101-choosing-a-surface-material. You can do the refacing of the cabinets yourself and apply those savings to the counter-top of your dreams. Best wishes on accomplishing your goals :)

I'd advise you to go to your local Kitchen / Cabinet shop / Sears / J C Penny or even Home Depot or Lowes & ask for advise from them. That way you will get a professional opinion. And stick to your guns about what you want. After all-you have to live with it. If they want your $ /business, they will try hard to accommodate you. Good Luck! And please share finished job in photo.
