How do I stiffen hemp rope so it can hold a shape?

I want to make a nautical style lamp, so the rope will be supported by the light/cord/harp apparatus.

Soak the hemp in glue. Place on wax paper while it dries. Though it depends on how thick the hemp is as to how stiff it will stay.

soak it in modpodge. that will stiffen it up. Also you can get some starch and make it real thick and soak in that.
