Faux board and batten on plaster walls

Question

I'm wondering if board and batten could be done on my wallpapered living room plaster walls without removing the wallpaper?  If I paint  over the wallpaper with Kilz, and put batten over the seams with liquid nails, then  seal, caulk, then repaint over it all the color I want the room? I'm thinking of covering the seams with the battens and adding a batten in the middle of the 21' space between seams.  Has anyone out there ever done this? The wallpaper is glued on heavily onto the plaster wall and wondered if this would be an easier job then removing the wallpaper. Would love any advice before I begin this project. Thanks.

Question-Is board-and-batten the look you want for this room? If you just want to change the color of the walls, then take off the existing paper. Painting over wallpaper never works, but if this is a paper designed for painting over, then try it on that end wall.

i think it would work. I've paintedd over wallpaper many times. You might want to use a good sealer/primer to help keep the painted look even.

If you wall paper is stuck 100% you should be ok if you use think coats. If it is vinyl wall covering you will be good as it has a surface more resilient to moisture but then kills is definitely needed. You may see some bubbling of the paper as you paint..leave it alone and it will probably suck back up and disappear after it dries. You may want to consider painting horizontal stripes in lieu of attaching battens as I think you may get a profile difference at the crown molding with the batten strips if you are going all the way up.

Is your wall flat? Many times I see plaster walls that have waves or bumps in them. That may be hard to make your battens lay flat enough even with caulk. Great idea! I hope it works for you. Be sure to show us 'after' pics.

I agree with Dee, if the paper is suck on solid, this should work. I'd advise nailing instead of using liquid nails. You never know when you might want to change this in the future and liquid nails would be make that worse than removing wallpaper.
