Even with the changes you made, your cabinets are making your kitchen look old and outdated. You need to either paint or stain them.

    White Cabinets?

Paint the cabinets white and switch out the dated hardware on the cabinets. You could also pick out one of the lighter beige tile colors and use IT for the cabinets, since all-white may turn out looking starker than you want. As it is now, the brown/white/brown/white effect from white appliances inserted among darker cabinets makes the room look really chopped up. I think unifying the colors will help a lot; it's a NICE kitchen -- convenient layout and lots of nice cabinet space -- and I can't wait to see what you do with it!. Be sure you share the finished project! (I'd also remove the dated-looking scalloped wood trim over the sink; I don't think the scallop fits very well with the much-sleeker, more modern and less 1970s looking tile/Corian you've used. But I'm NO designer -- my house attests to that!)

Ty. I will remove it...I think it needs to go, too. Actually antique brass hardware with Urbane gray cabinets is very pretty. But what hardware would you advise?

I'd have painted the cabinets white and made different choices on cabinet and backsplash; also would've done an over range microwave to create space. That being said, your choices now in a kitchen this size are very limited (don't feel bad, mine's even smaller, working on redesign now). Get rid of the scalloped wood insert above between sections, it really dates your kitchen. I guess I'd have started with the cabinets and then made my other choices, as I did in this remodel. That being said, perhaps a dove grey on your cabinets, and take your time prepping them...you need to bring some color into the walls to make that work...maybe something in a sea blue?

I would take out the bar/peninsula and replace it with an island which will connect the kitchen to the adjacent sitting room. Also, paint the kitchen cabinets as stated by others.

I think white cabinets would make this space too stark with the white counters and appliances...gray/taupe shades will blend well with what you have. As for me I would paint the lower cabinets a few shades darker than the upper cabinets first then test wall colors for added drama. No pastels in the kitchen area since there is so little wall and the adjoining room doesn't HAVE to be painted the same color...blending in a small space is more interesting than matching and a lot more fun.

off white would accent the other colors in there., especialy if you are not changing anything else. Suzi

I would prime and paint the cabinets a very soft muted color in neutral tones..The contrast would look very pretty with white appliances. If you are keeping flooring ,I would go with lt.beiges or soft mochas.I would try to keep cabinet and sink hardware in same hues, preferably in med.-dark bronzes.I would paint yellow wall in med.mocha and rest of walls in very soft beiges. It would make it appear much more updated.I think you would not go wrong by using colors in backsplash as a guide.

I have no problem with the white countertop and appliances. They are classic, bright, clean and won't go out of style and then be costly to replace. Put your color into easy changeable paint. The cabinets I also like in a neutral color pulled from the backsplash and/or floor. I'd paint the walls a lighter tint of that color. Then I would add a pop of bright color in artwork and a bowl of fruit or decorative object.

Suzi Tyler is correct. Before reading comments my thought was not white, but off white or cream. Also Just reconfigure furniture placement in the TV area might help with cohesiveness of the two rooms.

If you are seriously considering painting the cabinets, white cabinets will make your kitchen look much larger and blend the appliances into the background. Any other color will make the white appliances stand out, and that will give the space a choppy, not cohesive, look. Don't go off-white...It will make the cabinets look yellowed next to the appliances. Match the white paint to the white of the appliances. Then use a pale colored-paint to paint your walls...a shade from the tile. White ceiling. Take everything out of your space when you paint, and then put things back one piece at a time. New hardware, new lighting, and you have a beautiful, clean, simplified design. Good luck!

Here's my 2 cents...I agree w/ others saying you should go white w/ the cabinets. It will make the area bigger. The only thing I would add to it as an interesting backing for the small wrap around counter would be to add distressed & painted ceiling tiles. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/532621093407712404/ Not sure if this will even be your style, but I thought it might be an interesting conversation piece. It would also give you something other than the complete white of the kitchen. Hope it helps.

I wouldn't do two-toned upper and lower cabinets. It is too trendy and not classic. Unless, of course, you don't mind repainting in a few short years when that look becomes dated. Look at Rustoleum Kitchen Transformation kits and the variety of options they have. Maybe a tone on tone cabinet color that works with all your tile, then a white glaze (part of the kit) to create continuity with your white appliances.

    White is right.

Top white, bottom whatever color you love!

White cabinets. Chalk board paint wall near dishwasher around door way. It would be fun and blend with back splash to give an updated look. Also useful for a family message center.

Any particular white you think best?
    • Susan Susan on Aug 17, 2015
Use paint chips and match to your fridge...the wrong white will just make your appliances look dated. A dead on match will make them sparkle and look intentional.

Hi Donna, Yes, I would paint both upper and lower cabinets the same white...You have a galley kitchen, so keeping the cabinets consistent in a small space will unify everything and give the illusion of a larger area. I understand about the concern with the kids...I have a white kitchen and you do see every spot...However, there is no hiding the spills and dirt. I have had kitchens with darker color schemes and I shudder to think how much mess I missed because I couldn't see it! If you are doing the painting yourself, just make sure you degrease the cabinets (use TSP), sand lightly, prime, and two coats of a good semi-gloss white paint that matches the appliances. It will be beautiful!

Umm find a country white. First find the color for bottom and compare next to each other. Use satin or semigloss. I used satin. I found an oops paint. I can send you a picture of the lid if you want my white or just find a nice one in Ben Moore or Home Depot!

Well it's a small space which makes your cabinetry predominant. Just a suggestion for making it appear more spacious and creating a bit more flow. Good luck to you ! ๐Ÿ˜€

Just so you know I really love your cabinets. After looking at the great room picture at great length, I can't really say what I would do to rearrange. It looks as if you have this big wide area from the kitchen to the chairs in the great room. Maybe if you just move your furniture out a little. To me the picture looks as if you have everything pushed close together and looks congested. I am not an interior designer at all. I think I am just lucky at guessing.

I'm personally nuts about bin pulls like the pic below; you might consider leaving the upper cabinet hardware (on closer look, it really is nice, but the rest of the room seems to be "trending" more modern . . . listen to me talking as if I have a clue about interior design. Please don't pay a whole lot of attention to what I say; if you saw my kitchen, you'd laugh.) in place on the cabinets but switching to matching-finish "cup pulls" for the drawers. These just give a gorgeous touch to just about any kitchen I've ever seen them in. (And as soon as I can afford to make the switch, I'm heading that direction for my cabinets. But I have a bunch of cabinetry -- 21 drawers in all -- so I'm waiting for that splurge.) LOVE your flooring! Have fun with whatever you do! (these bin pulls come in all sorts of finishes, varying sizes, and, of course, a wide price range)

Donna, painting the cabinets white will make a huge difference. Check out this inexpensive idea that uses paint and molding: http://goo.gl/4fej5A You can also remove your cabinet doors like this blogger did: http://goo.gl/ErtkY5

My concern with white cabinets is its too much with white appliances, esp in a small kitchen...I'm still thinking a very pale dove grey is another option.
