Crappy sliding doors

Susan
by Susan
We have hollow core sliding doors for our bedroom closet. They are constantly coming off the rails and are a pain to put back on. I don't really want to replace the doors with bi-fold as they are as much trouble. Any suggestions?

Have you thought about removing them all together and using curtain panels? Another idea, though I know you said you didn't want to replace them with bi-fold doors, but what about replacing them with two standard doors opening at the center like french doors? If you can get the right size, of course.

Becky, I had a thought about curtains, but not sure if I want to go that way. Maybe the two doors opening from the middle. I have to consider the space I have to open the two doors. Maybe go with bi-fold doors off the tracks. Wonder if that would work...

@Susan, if you do go with curtains, you can removed the sliding door hardware and replace it with a curtain track system. Your curtain panels will glide much easier, like in a hospital room.

Do you have clearance for a barn door?

I hadn't thought about that...I could work with that. Thank you for the idea!

There are some great ideas for doors that attach over the closet and slide on the outside like barn doors. You could have two smaller ones going each direction or one to whichever direction works for your room. We used wooden bifold doors and they slide very easily. You can save the sliding doors, there are ton of diy projects for those doors.

If you go with bifold doors like I have on my upstairs laundry area, they make them with no tracks on the bottom but the track is on the top. We have had them for 20 years and have not had a bit of a problem with them...just keep rolling along! Hope that helps!
