Sunny back yard

We have a lovely back yard with a printed cement patio going out of the patio doors. One problem, it faces the south and is very hot and sunny in summer. Therefore, we are limited to the times we can spend out there because we have no shade. We were thinking about building Pergola What are your recommendations? Thanks, Jan

Pergola sounds great. Is there soil to plant grapes so the vines can climb on it?

We had that problem with our deck in the Texas summers. I tried a market umbrella (the really big ones) but it had to be repositioned constenly if you and guests were sitting out there very long, and it could only provide shade for one or two chairs. The next year I purchased a canvas covered steel gazebo from Lowe's. That was wonderful for 2 summers, then the rotted canvas shredded. I then bought one from Walmart which was better designed and had corner shelves for potted plants - and cost over $100 less. After 2 years the canvas still shredded but that is just the nature of the canvas used for these exposed to full sun all day and into the evening. I'm trying to design my own canopy this time.
